Read the record

How to read an insurance agent’s license status

Read license status together with the state, license type, line of authority and data date. “Active” describes a particular record at a particular time. It is not a rating, a guarantee of conduct or proof of every carrier relationship. The issuing state is the authority on its status labels and restrictions.

Use the label to decide what to check next

States do not all use the same vocabulary. This table is a reading aid, not a legal determination. Open the source record and any linked order or explanation rather than treating a short label as the whole answer.

Displayed resultPractical next step
ActiveCheck the relevant line, dates, restrictions and insurer relationship
Expired or inactiveAsk the regulator whether there is a renewed or different current license
Suspended or revokedRead the regulator’s order and current record; do not infer reinstatement
Listed / unclear statusThe record exists, but current authority needs confirmation at the source
Not found or unavailableCheck the query and coverage; absence is not a status determination

The date can change the answer

A copy of a regulator file reflects that file’s date. A live lookup may still have its own data date. A dated human review reflects the check on the date shown. Keep those dates separate from the day you happen to read the page.

For example, a screenshot taken before a renewal deadline cannot establish today’s status. Reopen the official record. A blank expiration field also does not establish that a license is permanent; the source may use another renewal model or omit that field.

Check the line, not just the status

A line of authority identifies the type of insurance authorization shown on a license. Match it to the transaction you are considering. If the wording is unfamiliar, use the regulator’s license-type guidance or ask the department to explain it.

An agent can have more than one entry and different statuses across states or license types. Do not turn a single active entry into an “all clear” for every product, jurisdiction or insurer.

How AgentVerified presents status

Public records on AgentVerified distinguish source information, file dates and live checks when available. The application uses displayed expiration dates to avoid presenting an old active row as current after its expiration, and separates unavailable checks from successful results.

A reviewed AgentVerified page is a different product: its seal records a dated NPN, name and license-status check. Paying for a profile does not change regulator status. For a conflict between this site and the current regulator record, use the regulator and report the discrepancy to us.
