Write down what you need before comparing people
Make a short list of the doctors, hospitals, prescriptions and pharmacies you want to check. Note how often you travel or spend time outside your home area, the services you expect to use, and the costs or coverage rules you want explained. These details help you ask the same questions of each agent; they do not determine which plan you should choose.
Use Medicare’s Plan Finder and official coverage information to research current options. Network participation, drug coverage, premiums and other costs can differ by plan and year. Confirm plan details with the plan and your providers before enrolling.
Verify the person’s license separately from product fit
Ask for the agent’s legal name, the state where they are licensed, and the insurance line relevant to your question. Check the state regulator’s current record. An AgentVerified reviewed profile shows the date and scope of its public-record check; profile details about Medicare products, languages and meeting options are supplied by the agent and are not a regulator’s endorsement.
A license check does not prove that the agent represents every insurer or plan, that a listed product is available in your ZIP code, or that a plan meets your needs. Ask the agent which companies and types of coverage they can discuss in your area and how they are paid. Verify plan availability and details directly with Medicare or the plan.
Ask each agent the same questions
Compare answers, not badges or rankings. These prompts can help you understand the conversation and decide whether to continue. You do not have to enroll during a meeting.
- Which states are you licensed in, and what license line applies to the coverage we are discussing?
- Which insurers and kinds of Medicare coverage can you discuss where I live? Are there options you do not represent?
- Can we focus only on the topics I asked to discuss? What should I expect at a first appointment?
- How are you compensated for the products you discuss, and are there companies or plan types you do not offer?
- Will you help me check my doctors, prescriptions, pharmacy and expected costs against the plan’s current official materials?
- May I take the information away and decide later? Where can I confirm each detail independently?
Consider free, objective counseling too
Your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers one-on-one Medicare information and counseling through state and local networks. SHIP is a useful option if you want help understanding choices without asking an insurance agent to represent you. Find local assistance through the Administration for Community Living.
Medicare’s agent-meeting rules say an agent may discuss only the products you agreed to hear about, unless you ask about other options. You can pause a conversation, request written plan materials, and verify details independently before making an enrollment decision.
